Wine Explorers

How it started

I passed my WSET 2 in December 2018, tutored by Annette Scarfe MW. During the pandemic, I decided to start Wine Explorers, to take my friends on a journey through the 6 noble grapes. Partly for social reasons, partly as a way to recall and practice what I learned.

Every 2-3 months, I’d curate wines from around the world for a tasting session on one grape varietal. For each varietal, I created a presentation to give them an overview of the grape, where it grows, what it tastes like in different regions, and tasting notes. Sometimes we’d do a blind tasting (like the photo above). Attendees also learned how to apply the WSET 2 lexicon to the wine they taste. This first sequence of Wine Explorers concluded in June 2022.

How it’s going

Now I’m starting a new sequence, based on Drinking and Knowing Things (DKAT). I’ll curate wines based on 1 or 2 of the emails, and we’ll have fun seeing what they taste like. Depending on how much time I have, the tastings will be accompanied by an educational presentation.

This new sequence will be designed to be experimental, educational, and fun. If you read DKAT, that’s the vibe I’m going for. This will not be for you if you have strong opinions on wine (e.g. Burgundy is THE BEST) or if you’re known to be a wine snob. Expect to try wines you may or may not enjoy, in the name of curiosity.
